Your ultimate guide to non-alcoholic sparkling

Celebrations and joyful shindigs are made for bubbles and clinking glasses. But what do you do if you’re trying to cut out the giggle juice? Thankfully, it’s precisely this absence of giggle juice that allows you to let your hair down and enjoy each occasion to its fullest.

Our range of lovingly crafted non-alcoholic sparkling was borne from a quest to make the impossible possible - giving you the freedom to drink your drink, your way - so you can enjoy the mirth and merriment of your evening with fewer calories and no hangover the next day.

Read on for everything you need to know about non-alcoholic Champagne and sparkling wines - from what it is to what it tastes like, and where you can order some for your next occasion.

What is non-alcoholic sparkling?

Non-alcoholic sparkling is typically wine made the same way as traditional wine but with the alcohol removed before bottling.

Depending on the technique used to remove the alcohol, non-alcoholic sparkling wine can include trace amounts of alcohol; however, to be considered non-alcoholic, the amount of alcohol must be less than 0.5% ABV.

Non-alcoholic sparkling wine (like our impossibly crafted Classico) can also be made without any traditional wine or alcohol and result in an alcohol-free alternative with 0% ABV that looks, tastes and sashays around the palate just like the original!

Sparkling wine or champagne?

All Champagne is sparkling wine, but not all sparkling wine is Champagne - so what’s the difference? The main difference between sparkling wine and Champagne is where it comes from; if a label says ‘Champagne’, the sparkling wine is grown, made and bottled in the Champagne region of France.

Sparkling wine can be made in any region using any grape, so when deciding between a Champagne or sparkling wine made in other areas, it’s best to consider your preferred level of fruitiness, freshness, body and bouquet.

How is non-alcoholic sparkling made?

When crafting non-alcoholic sparkling wine and Champagne, techniques can vary depending on where it’s made and who makes it. If traditional winemaking is involved, the winemaker will follow a similar process to their alcoholic wines but will remove the alcohol before bottling. There are three main methods currently used to remove the alcohol in traditional winemaking:

  • Vacuum distillation: The alcohol is evaporated at a low temperature using a vacuum chamber. In this method, most aromas are also evaporated and need to be blended back in afterwards.
  • Spinning cone columns: The alcohol is repeatedly evaporated and condensed at a low temperature using inverted cones and centrifugal forces.
  • Reverse osmosis: A cross-flow filtration system that filters out the aroma compounds and phenolics before the alcohol is removed by distillation. Afterwards, the remaining water is added back into the filtered wine concentrate.

When using traditional winemaking techniques to create non-alcoholic Champagne or sparkling wine and Champagne, trace elements of alcohol usually remain behind, so if you’re wondering, “is alcohol-free Champagne really alcohol-free?” the answer is yes, but check the label to make sure there’s no more than 0.5% ABV.

At Lyre’s, our impossibly crafted range of non-alcoholic sparkling wine is made using zero alcohol, resulting in 0% ABV in each glass! Our team works hard to create a ‘like for taste’ experience using the finest all-natural essences and extracts, meticulously researched and balanced to guarantee our non-alcoholic beverages look and taste just like the original.

Is non-alcoholic wine high in sugar?

On average, non-alcoholic sparkling wine and Champagne have half the calories as alcoholic wine, allowing you to drink your drink, your way, with fewer calories! Our non-alcoholic sparkling wine ( Classico) contains 144 calories per 750ml, compared to a bottle of Prosecco which has approximately 500 calories per 750ml.
